4 World Human Rights Leaders Biographical Articles with Activities for ESL
What educators are saying
Description
In this ready-to-go biographical article, activity, and research project mini-unit bundle about world human rights leaders - Malala, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Gandhi - beginner to intermediate ESL students practice reading and responding to informational texts. These texts can be used for an in-class activity, homework, or an emergency sub plan. As a final, project-based assessment students conduct internet research and present on a hero of their choice (see details below). I designed this resource with upper-level elementary, middle school, and high school ESL students in mind because I often find resources that are appropriate for my students' language levels, but not their age levels. My goal is to create ESL materials that are appropriate for both. Included in this resource are:
1. Malala, Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandela, and Gandhi biographical articles (each 1.5 - 2 pages in length)
2. Vocabulary: Academic vocabulary (Tier 2 & 3 words) in bold print throughout reading. Vocabulary chart, adapted from Learner's Dictionary, at the end of reading with definitions. Parts of speech and singular/plural words are also identified in the chart.
3. Spelling Practice: Students unscramble vocabulary words and write the correct spelling in sentences taken from the reading.
4. Vocabulary Practice: Students complete cloze sentences with the correct vocabulary word. Sentences are out of the context of the reading.
5. Vocabulary Cards: Words and definitions on cards. Great for matching activities, such as Memory, or word walls.
6. Grammar: Students conjugate verbs from reading into past tense.
7. Text feature Identification: Students identify text features like title, subheadings, topic and concluding sentences, and sequence of events.
8. Question Annotation: Students underline question words once, verbs twice, and circle the subject.
9. Reading Comprehension: After students annotate questions, they answer comprehension questions using complete sentences.
10. Cause and Effect worksheet based on reading.
11. Paragraph-Writing Outline: Sections for topic sentence, details, examples, and sentence.
12. Paragraph Writing Template
13. Hero Paragraph Writing and Oral Presentation Research Project: In this week-long project, Beginner to Intermediate ESL students write about and present their heroes. Their hero can be someone in their personal lives, like a family member, someone who is from their country, or someone who is well-known internationally. First, students read a text about Jesse Owens and identify the topic sentence, details, examples and concluding sentence. Students deconstruct the Jesse Owens paragraph in order to help them in writing their own paragraphs. Then, they conduct internet research on their own heroes. They must find 3 reasons (details) why this person is their hero, then provide more information (examples) about these reasons. Both of the topic and concluding sentences are scaffolded, but I provided a blank copy of the paragraph writing outline for students to construct their own topic and concluding sentences if desired. Finally, students present their heroes to their classmates. This research project includes*:
a. Jesse Owens text
b. Guiding research questions
c. Paragraph-writing outline
d. Writing templates for rough and final drafts
e. Grading rubric
f. Writing checklist
g. Peer evaluation forms
h. Teaching Tips
*All of which can be viewed in the preview
