Burger Up! Creating Your Own Burger Business
I developed this activity originally for my Career Internship Students to better help them for the workforce, although the activity will easily work with elementary -to- High School students. Capacity: Customary and Metric Mini Labs
These mini labs were created out of the need to teach customary and metric units of capacity in an investigative setting. Each lab was assigned to half the class for the first day and then flip flopped for the second day. By using a hands-on approach, students in my class understood how much each measure actually contains. They walked away from the investigations with a mental image that made this type of learning concrete. Remember that you cannot teach size with paper and pencil! The lab uses

Planning a Healthy Meal and Shopping Template (Special Education)
This is a meal planning guide that incorporates the 5 basic food groups. Students will use a cookbook to decide on the main course of the meal, and from there will add on side dishes to help balance the food groups presented in the meal. Students will then make a shopping list of the needed materials. If applicable, they can shop for the food items at the store, working to find the total cost of purchase, use the "dollar up" method to pay, and calculate the amount of change they should get back.

Learning Table Manners (Group role-play activity)
Good for social skills groups or feeding groups, or just in general teaching children about table manners and what is expected/unexpected at the table. Students are to role-play "unexpected" behaviors and discuss what is happening, how they feel (eg. uncomfortable, disgusted), and what to do instead.
