Coulomb's Law Inquiry Lab with Magnets

Created by
Dunigan Science
Coulomb's law requires expensive and delicate equipment. This chape and easy version is a clever and innovative inquiry lab that is appropriate for on-level, pre-AP, honors, and AP physics. Students work in groups of 4 to determine the effect of distance on the repulsive force between two similar magnets. Disk magnets are best, neodymium disk magnets even better, but any small magnets will work. Student express surprise at feeling the force of repulsion between the magnets. This is measured

This lab includes two versions of a catapult lab (calculus based and non-calculus based). Students work in groups to collect data on a ball launched using a catapult. Students create regression equations using a graphing calculator or spreadsheet. Also included is a painted cubes lab that includes 4 types of functions. Courses: algebra 1, algebra 2, pre-calculus, calculus Here are links to my other algebra projects: Click Here to see my project: Indirect Measurement Labs Click Here to see

Math Lab:Exponential Functions and Seed Overproduction vs Time/DISTANCE LEARNING

My students totally enjoy doing the following math lab! They invariably find it to be both fun to do as well as informative. They readily relate to discussions within. * Students work with a partner * Students begin by a brief discussion about seed overproduction * Students are provided with assumptions used to complete the lab * Students work collaboratively to determine the number of seeds in a bell pepper * Students find the average number of seeds in a bell pepper using the totals

BUNDLE: 45-45-90, 30-60-90, CIRCLE AND SQUARE PUZZLES

A collage of a circle and a square is presented; diagonals are inserted.* A chart below the figures is given for students to fill in the measurements of each segment and/or circumference based on one given value.* The puzzle is quite the challenge, but can be a rewarding activity to complete especially if students compete with one another in class to see who can fill the table fastest and most accurately.* Additionally, the puzzle can be used as an extra credit project when they finish daily as

This project set includes 8 projects that are cooperative learning, hands-on labs. Students collect data that fit exponential, logarithmic, or trigonometric patterns. Students will create equations from the data and use the equations to make predictions. Many of the equations students create will be through the regression process on graphing calculators or spreadsheets. classes: algebra 2, pre-calculus, calculus, applied math Here are links to my other algebra projects: Click Here to see m

This project has 1 sample lab to complete together as a class and 6 other labs that create a linear relationship. Students work through the labs collecting data and then analyze the data to create equations, use calculators or spreadsheets to create regression equations (best fit lines), and use the equations to make predictions. classes: algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, applied math Here are links to my other algebra projects: Click Here to see my project: Systems of Equations - Comparing Ph

Discovering Sine and Cosine Function Graphs

Created by
I Heart Numbers
In this activity, students will use a linked Geogebra to explore the graphs of sine and cosine functions. They will manipulate the amplitude, the period, the phase shift, and the vertical shift parameters to determine how changing those parameters in the function affects its graph. They will reflect on how the algebra of the function relates to its geometry. They will then reflect upon what they have done by coming up with an equation for the period of the functions, exploring the sine/cosine

Pre-Calc: Graphing and Comparing Exponential & Logarithmic Functions

Created by

This worksheet uses the graphing calculator and is a discovery lesson detailing the properties of the graphs of exponential and logarithmic functions. It is divided into two sections so that it can be done during two class periods. The last page asks the student to make comparisons between the graphs and the properties of the two functions, leading to the inverse property between the two. This activity lends itself easily to collaborative learning and that is encouraged. Students are also enc

Vertical Motion Exploration Math Lab - Discovering through Inquiry

Do you have those students that always ask about how this relates to real life? This math lab is the solution. Students will work through an experiment just like they would in science class to discover through self-inquiry that vertical motion is best represented with parabolas and quadratic functions. The experiment allows students to discover this phenomena through inquiry and data collection. After collecting data, students will have their "a-ha" moment. Students will quickly be able to

MaLab Complementary and Supplementary Angles from Light Rays/DISTANCE LEARNING

Students have a great time with this lab learning about complementary and supplementary angles as seen through the following activity using light rays! * Students begin the activity by defining Complementary and Supplementary angles * Students observe light traveling in straight, parallel lines through the teeth of a comb * Students learn about angles of incidence and angles of reflection using light, the comb and a mirror. * Students calculate the complements and supplements to the ang

Algebra: Transformations of Functions Lab

This activity can be done alone, at home, or in groups. Using graphing calculators, students first graph parent functions (linear, quadratic, cubic, square root, etc). Then they perform a series of transformations and write down what they notice. This will lead them to the correct conclusion as to the meaning of A, B, C & D in the equation. No key is provided.

This lesson integrates technology to allow students to explore families of functions. Students must know translations of quadratic functions in order to complete this activity. Further knowledge of functions is valuable but not necessary. This lesson also requires the use of Geogebra--a free interactive geometry software. A web version is available, but the instructions are specific for the Windows downloaded version. This lesson could easily be adapted to any Geogebra version. CCSS F-BF 3.
