My name is Ron Johnson and I have been teaching for the last 22 years, mostly in sixth grade. Although I have taught all the subject areas, I have spent a lot of time learning, experimenting, creating, and practicing how to effectively teach mathematics. I should have it down in another 22 years.
I try to immediately engage students in whatever we're doing. I try to integrate hands-on activities with multimedia presentations on a daily basis. From the concrete to the abstract, I try to help my students connect the dots. With a dose of music and art thrown into the lesson everyday, we try to keep both sides of the brain healthy.
Well, I've won a number of fiddle and guitar contests if that counts, including the California State Flatpicking Guitar contest one year. There was math involved.
