During college, I worked as a writing tutor at the university writing center for two years. Tutoring traditional and non-traditional students as they grappled with daunting twelve page essays further instilled in me the appreciation of a strong work ethic and the desire to succeed in others. In each student's struggle to understand the complexity of writing, I identified with their desire to overcome a challenge. This experience solidified my desire to become a teacher. I have now taught for eight years at a North Carolina high school. I have taught grades ninth, tenth, and eleventh with a mixture of standard and honors classes. In some students I see a semblance of those stressed out college students striving to learn with difficulty. Not all students will grasp what comes so easily to others and their struggle makes me want to work to help them connect with difficult concepts and skills. Even though teaching is so challenging, I value my profession and believe in its worth.
Students need to believe that what they are being taught has practical value; consequently, I am constantly trying to find ways to connect what I teach to their everyday lives and their future!
I've never received an award, unless you count student smiles when they "get" whatever I'm teaching!
I received a Bachelor's Degree in English Education.
