As an elementary teacher for 36 years, I have struggled with a lack of quality materials that provide the necessary practice for concept mastery. It has been my experience that many textbooks and commercially produced materials do not provide the depth of practice and repetition required for student mastery. I have been writing most of my own supplemental materials for years, striving to meet the needs of students who need more than one or two exposures to a concept in order to achieve mastery. My many years in the classroom have provided me opportunities to work with changing curriculum standards and increasing demands for student performance. I have worked with second and third graders throughout my career and have a very solid understanding of the learning process and the needs of young students.
My teaching style is my own. I do not know a label that would be fitting. I believe in supporting learners, while not doing for them anything that they can do for themselves. I use a lot of scaffolding-i.e.,explicit teaching, followed by a lot of guided practice, then a lot of independent practice. I believe that time on task is crucial to mastery. I strive to create a learning atmosphere is warm and friendly, but at the same time businesslike, and "no-nonsense." I believe that the most effective way to build students' self-esteem, is to help them master the skills and concepts they need to be successful.
