I started out in LA, fresh out of art school with no job prospects, I taught 1st and 2nd grade, loved it and never looked back. After a year of night school to get my teacher training, we headed up to N. Cal where I taught 5th grade for 8 years, started a family, did a lot of projects with the state history/social science group, finished a masters in Ed then followed my husband to New York where I tutored kids in a private school. Then on to Michigan, yep following hubby again :-) In Michigan I took a reading support position in a middle school. Worked there for 18 years, teaching everything from language arts, to US history, and visual art. Through blogs and sites and Youtube I've shared on-line A LOT! It helps me feel like I belong to something bigger, something we are all a part of!
My lessons, units, blogging and youtube vids reflect my lifelong belief that project based, interdisciplinary, collaborative, student centered activities designed to lead students gently to the "ahah!" moments, to grasp big ideas and deeper understandings from their own frame of reference and knowledge base are where it's at for helping kids experience lasting, meaningful learning.
