RACE Graphic Organizers (MUST HAVE!)- CCSS Evidence-Based Open Response Writing
RACE is a strategy used to help students organize their thinking when writing a text dependent, open response answer. I have used this strategy in my class for over three years in grades second through fourth and saw a lot of improvement in my students’ mastery of writing open response answers. Their answers went from short, incorrectly citing evidence, beginning with “because” to full answers with evidence, explanations and transition words.

Evidence & Elaboration Anchor Chart & Sort Activity- R.A.C.E.
I created this resource to help students with learning the difference between evidence and elaboration. This will help them to include both when discussing or writing in response to text.
There is also an evidence and elaboration sentence starter sort: for the sort have students cut and sort out the sentence stems based on whether it is transition words used for evidence or elaboration.

Evidence is information cited from the text or graphic that supports their claim (answer).

RACE RUBRIC & POSTER: For Writing and Grading Open Response- Common Core Aligned
Rubric can be used when grading students writing. This is a great tool to help give students specific feedback on their answers. Also, I used this tool in the class during peer reviews. A student would read another student's work and give them feedback using the rubric. It was very rewarding to see the students using the vocabulary from RACE when discussing the scores with their writing buddy. Soon after introducing the rubric I saw improvements in the students scores.This tool is a MUST HAVE!
