This is the accompanying teaching sequence for the unit “Teaching Claim Evidence Reasoning (CER): A Whodunit Mystery.” It includes a mystery to solve, all the evidence (which can be turned into manipulatives), rubrics for presentations and writing, teaching instructions, graphic organizers, and solutions. Research that Matters: Changing the Numbers using LGBTQ Youth Statistics
This is a collaborative research project that pulls from recent national statistics around the experiences and mental health of LGBTQ Youth. These statistics are pretty heartbreaking, and this project asks students to work collaboratively to problem solve by creating a plan that will "change the numbers." I use this project in my Gender Studies class, but it would be great for any English or Social Studies based class where you want your students to consider real-world problems affecting youth,

Coffee Shop Solutions Graphic Organizer
This graphic organizer, derived from the side of a Starbucks cup, is designed to guide students through critical thinking and into creative problem solving. This can be used in solving problems related in an article (current events, social studies/history documents, etc.), editing and revising written compositions, and science experiments. It can even serve as a template for writing poetry (Decaf and Shots: remove my loneliness and give me hope).
