Science Unit: Buoyancy with Workbook and ASL support
This is a science unit that I made to introduce Buoyancy to my first graders.
The presentation includes:
- What is buoyancy?
- Intro. of molecules
- Intro. of density
- Links to ASL signs
- Links to videos about buoyancy
The student workbook consists of tables that they can fill out as they experiment with every-day objects to see if they sink or float.
My kids loved doing this unit and we supplemented with other experiments like building foil boats and weighing them down with pennies.

The unit consists of a presentation and student workbook.
The presentation includes:
- What is matter?
- Solids (definition, examples, links to ASL signs)
- Liquids (definition, examples, links to ASL signs)
- Gases (definition, examples, links to ASL signs)
- Links to videos about 3 phases of matter
The workbook is a series of pages where the student chooses the state of matter for each picture.
