Book Introduction Lesson: "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan
An introductory lesson on the graphic novel "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan in which students watch an interview with Tan about his graphic novel and his writing process and take notes on his answers. Also includes an introductory vocabulary exercise. Works well to introduce students to the graphic novel before they begin reading.

"Us and Them" Comic - House on Mango Street
It's about time to change things up. Your kids need to be creative, have fun, and learn simultaneously!
The solution? This "Us and Them" Comic!
"Us and Them" is one of the shortest vignettes in House on Mango Street. Have your students read and then generate their own comics. They will select who they are--Mango Street residents or visitors--then they create the comic from their perspective and share with partners/whole group!

Persepolis Literary Analysis Student Collaboration Chart
I created this interactive graphic organizer for students to work in small groups to read and analyze sections of the novel together. They each have a part from identifying an important image or caption from the graphic novel to explaining why it is important to the theme or conflict. I have included a sample from the first section and the document includes templates for as many sections as you want to assign.
