Grading essays objectively can be difficult - a student may write well but miss the point, or have terrible style but excellent content. Use this rubric to assign 1-4 points in each of the covered areas; add up the points when you're done, divide by the total possible points (40) and you'll have your percentage grade, confident that you have taken into consideration all the areas that need grading!

This is the Rubric for my Advanced Placement Language & Composition Synthesis Project. Students write a synthesis essay question, research articles for the question, write an annotated bibliography explaining why they chose which sources they chose, write several reflections, and present this information as if they were presenting it to the College Board in the form of a portfolio that includes drafts and a table of contents.

Rhyme-In-Time (Homophones Homonyms Multinyms Word List) (Excel Spreadsheet)
I use this list to drive a creative writing project called "Rhyme-In-Time".
It is an activity that I use to help me craft and refine song lyrics.
It is powered by a large list of word groups - 2 or more words per group - that rhyme in special ways.
Some are what I call "double rhymes".
These words rhyme phonetically (they end in similar sounds), but they also rhyme thematically (they relate as concepts).
For example, "nameless" and "shameless" comes to mind.

This handout provides two website URLs for students to explore. Students answer a series of questions about the websites and then decide which of the two sites is a valid source for researching and which website is a hoax. Students are required to look "beyond the basics" to come up with the correct answer.
