TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am currently on maternity leave after the birth of my third (& final!) child. When not with my own kids, I teach mainstream Grades K-6 classes, with most experience in Grades 2-3. I have a passion for Gifted Education and completed postgraduate studies in this field in 2012 and then spent a number of years teaching in a G&T program for Grades 1 & 2 students. I have also spent time substitute teaching Years K-6 and private tutoring Years K-9 in English and Mathematics.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I do not believe in BUSY WORK! I believe all learning and activities should be purposeful, and as such, everything sold in my store elicits higher order thinking. While I try to make my products look attractive, I value content over presentation. I believe strongly in explicit teaching done in context. For example, when teaching narrative writing I explicitly teach structure and language features through the context of a class novel and a wide range of children's picture books. I then ask students to include what they have learnt from these other authors in their own narrative writing. This quote helps show how I teach in my classroom: "Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths pure theatre.” - Gail Goodwin. I have been told by colleagues that I should have been an actress, but I was only ever interested in being a teacher! I also believe in helping children reach their own potential. This means not making children learn things they already know. I use pre-testing to determine the starting point of each child's learning, and use post-testing to determine the growth of the child's learning and the success of my teaching. This helps me reflect on my teaching practice and refine my skills and lessons for future teaching episodes.
