TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching full-time for 26 years, and have taught from grades K - 12. I have taught as an Indigenous Education Resource Teacher for over 5 years. I am able to share my passion for Canadian Indigenous cultures. I try to incorporate and connect Indigenous beliefs and concepts throughout the curriculum.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a kinaesthetic learner and it shows in the lessons I create. I feel students engage in an activity when they can move, communicate and manipulate. My students work in an environment where they are encouraged to explore, create and try new things.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I was honoured at a potlatch in 1997, receiving the traditional Sto:lo names 'peq xa xa spath' (White Spirit Bear) and 'híkw q'oyí:ts' (Tall Elk). I have won the Multicultural and Anti-Racism Award in 2014 for the work I was doing to promote Indigenous culture in the classrooms.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am of Maori decent from my mother's side, but born in Vancouver. I have been a West Coast artist for more than 20 years. I have studied under Carmen Mckay (Sto:lo) and Mark George (Tsleil-Waututh). I am a carver, painter, and drum maker. The image on my home page is a carving I made called Eagle Spirit.
