TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 5 years of experience working at a therapeutic school for children with severe autism as the specials teacher (art, music, physical education, swimming, community trips and all things recreation and leisure). I've also spent years working in community recreation for people of all ages and disabilities but kids with autism is where my passion lies!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I base my instruction on the principles of structured teaching. I take my students IEP goals or general needs and work them into a recreation activity - from general skills like following directions, fine motor, taking turns, communicating wants, needs and choices to more specific academic goals like patterning, sequencing, matching etc. I'm constantly adapting materials to make them more visual for my students. I love using schedules, to-do lists, choice boards, social stories and other strategies.
