I have been a Special Education teacher for 10 years. I have worked in a Special Day school as a self-contained teacher for students with Multiple Disabilities, ages 4-7; as an Inclusion Resource Teacher for 1st-2nd grade students in-district. I am currently teaching a Kindergarten self-contained classroom with nonverbal students with autism.
Every student has the capacity to learn. It is up to us, as teachers, to find out which method is most effective with our students. I believe in Multiple Intelligences as the most effective way to reach all students. It is our responsibility to to teach students in a way that suites their learning style and abilities. I also love multi-sensory, hands-on learning! Long gone are the days where teachers lecture at the front of the class and students work quietly in workbooks independently.
