Description

The Yellow Decimal Board supports the child in developing a concrete understanding of the concept of decimal numbers.

Understanding the concept of decimal numbers is a pre-requisite for work with fractions. It is an integral component of the math curriculum, which Montessori herself compared to the "tree that supports the parts" for the child's understanding of the concept of numeration.

The yellow decimal material takes:

  • printable yellow decimal board
  • printable yellow board material (beads and cubes and circles and squares)
  • printable yellow board number cards from millions to millionths

This decimal material helps:

  • To introduce the concept of decimal numbers and their quantity to the child.*
  • To introduce the concept of decimal numbers and their number symbols to the child.
  • To help further the child's passage to abstraction.
  • To help the child associate the symbol with the quantity

There is a set of presentations available here:

Math 2 Unit 1: Yellow Decimal Numbers

*Fraction circle pieces can be purchased separately in my store here:

Fraction Cut-out Circles for Work with Decimal System and Fractions

This material is useful for children from ages 8-10 years of age and up.

After the Decimal Numbers Unit, the child will be ready for the unit on Operations (Addition, Multiplication, Subtraction, and Division) with the Decimal System.

Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.
