What educators are saying

Creative way to display the writing process. It used some mnemonics that make it easy for students to remember what is involved in revising and editing.

Description

This PDF file contains a giant pencil to depict the writing process (perfect for a bulletin board!) and a checklist to give to students during their personal writing processes.

Giant Bulletin Board Pencil

This pencil prints on regular (8.5"x11") printer paper and is about 40" when put together. It has a large pink eraser with the title "The Writing Process" written inside. The revision portion refers to the ARMS method, while the editing portion refers to the CUPS method. The yellow part of the pencil has 5 parts with the following information inside each part:

  • PREWRITE: Brainstorm and organize your ideas.
  • DRAFT: Use your ideas to write a story or essay.
  • REVISE: Add detail, Remove, Move, Substitute
  • EDIT: Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation, Spelling
  • PUBLISH: Write or type the final copy neatly.

This is a quick, easy, and functional decor option! Just print, laminate for durability (optional), tape together, and place on a wall.

Writing Process Checklist

My student use composition notebooks as their Writing Notebook, and 1/2 sheets of printer paper fit perfectly when I need them to tape something inside. The writing process checklist in this file contains 2 half sheets so you can print, cut down the middle, and distribute to students. Not only does it fit perfectly in composition notebooks -- it saves paper, too!

The included checklist mimics the giant wall pencil in looks and content, providing an up-close reminder for each step of the writing process. On the right of each page is a checkbox so students can keep track of where they are in the process for that particular writing piece.
