Description
Do you want fun and engaging ways to teach intermediate writing?? Included in this bundle, you will receive multiple writing plan sheets meant to scaffold your student's learning, several Roll and Write activities, a P.E.EL. puzzle, Writing Escape Room, and more!
These are all perfect for whole group, small group, and especially writing centers! I personally use all of these in my own classroom to teach the P.E.EL. style of writing!
What is a P.E.EL.?
P.E.EL. is a type of writing instruction designed to teach students as young as 3rd grade some of the strategies they will need later in life to write a professional essay. The students read an informational or opinion text and then they must answer a prompt based on the text. A P.E.EL. essay generally contains an introduction paragraph, 2 body paragraphs called P.E.EL. paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
What does P.E.EL. stand for?
P: point, or main idea
· the students find a main idea in the text
E: evidence
· the students back up their point with text evidence
EL: elaboration
· the students elaborate by visualizing their point and describing it to the reader
PLAN SHEET:
You will receive FIVE different printable writing practice plan sheets that can be used to scaffold your student’s learning all year long! I created these throughout my first year teaching intermediate ELA and have perfected them for you!
These writing plan sheets match the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) format so your students can have as much authentic practice as possible!
Included:
1. plan sheet with traceable P.E.EL. acronyms as well as what the acronyms represent to help your students memorize the plan sheet format
2. plan sheet with just the traceable letters - this can be used as a formative assessment to see if your students remember what each of the acronyms stands for
3. plan sheet with the acronyms and sentence starters to support your students as they begin to get their ideas down on paper
4. plan sheet with just the acronyms as you scaffold and offer less support
5. plain plan sheet with no acronyms or sentence starters, just lines to remind your students of the correct format
SENTENCE STARTER ROLL AND WRITE:
This activity can be used repeatedly for sentence starter practice whole group or in centers! All you need is some dice and your students are set to have some educational fun!
I use this activity multiple times throughout the year in my own classroom! It's a great way to introduce the starters as well as to assess them as they learn accurate spelling. An answer key is also included for your convenience!
INTRODUCTION SENTENCE ROLL AND WRITE:
I have found in my own classroom that often times the hardest part about writing for my students, is just getting started! With 10 different, engaging Roll and Write activities, you can help your students become confident in beginning their P.E.EL. essays with a strong Universal Statement!
What is a Universal Statement?
A Universal Statement is the first sentence in a student’s P.E.EL. essay. It is a general statement that covers the topic they will be writing about. In my classroom, the students come up with a hashtag (#) for the topic based on the article or text we are using for our text evidence. All of the topics in this activity are also written as hashtags!
Next, the students have to write a complete sentence to tell me a fact or two that they know about the topic. A rubric has not been included because these sentences can vary greatly based on what you want your students to do. I typically start the year by asking the kiddos to give me 2-3 adjectives about the topic. For example: Burgers can be yummy and salty. Eventually, I ask my students for more detail. It's really up to you and your teaching style!
Included Universal Statement Activities:
Fall Roll and Write
Halloween Roll and Write
Thanksgiving Roll and Write
Winter Holidays Roll and Write
Snowy Roll and Write
February Roll and Write
Spring Roll and Write
Diversity Roll and Write
Test Ready Roll and Write
Summer Roll and Write
ELABORATION ROLL AND WRITE:
Elaborating is one of the hardest skills a student can master. These Roll and Write activities allow your students to practice in an engaging way with 10 monthly themed topics for year-round practice!
What is elaboration?
Elaboration is exactly what it sounds like! The students are expanding on their writing by visualizing and describing it.
WRITING TASK CARD PUZZLE
The P.E.EL. Puzzle will make your kiddos WANT to read a whole paragraph!! With engaging topics like cell phones, getting paid for grades, and climate change, students will want to practice matching points to evidence and elaboration. And by matching each part of the P.E.EL. process to a prompt, your students will be able to stay on topic in their writing. Just print and cut!!!
This set includes:
- 4 informational puzzles: each with a prompt, point, evidence, and elaboration
- 4 opinion puzzles: each with a prompt, point, evidence, and elaboration
- Student recording sheets in large and small sizes to save paper
- Answer key
P.E.EL. WRITING ESCAPE ROOM | AMONG US THEMED
This Among Us themed escape room is one of the most engaging writing activities you will EVER do in your classroom! The children are given different steps of the writing process on task cards. They must find the mistake or the IMPOSTER on each card! By having students practice finding what is wrong with the writing, they will have strategies for identifying mistakes and fixing their own writing!
This set includes:
- Student directions
- 6 Puzzles
- 6 pages of task cards
- Student recording sheets in color and black and white
- Answer key
