The Writing Our World Basic Units are not differentiated by grade band. As such, the teacher will need to individualize the pace (and potentially the content) for their student(s). Unit 1 - Sentence Level: Sentences are the stepping stones to strong writing. Work your way through this first Sentence-Level Unit, adapted from Chapter 1 of The Writing Revolution®, to support students at this essential foundational level. 

Unit 2 - Sentence Expansion & Note Taking: Expand upon your students’ abilities to write robust sentences, and teach them invaluable note-taking skills through this Unit’s lessons, which align with The Writing Revolution® Chapter 2.

Units 3 & 4 - The Single Paragraph Outline (SPO): In Units 3 & 4, you will build upon your students’ strong sentence-level skills to guide them toward writing well-structured paragraphs. In Units 3 & 4, students learn how their executive functions play a role in the writing process as they dive into planning and drafting single-paragraph responses.

Unit 5 - Revision & Editing: Help your students take their writing to the next level with thoughtful revision and editing techniques perfect for sentence-level, single-paragraphs, and essays.

Unit 6 - Summarizing: Equip your students with the skills they need to write concise and thoughtful summaries. Each lesson of Unit 6 can be easily adapted to the content your students are currently studying so that you can provide summary writing practice across a wide variety of subject areas. 

Unit 7 - The Multiple Paragraph Outline (MPO): Support your students in planning, writing, and revising outstanding, robust, thoughtful essays with Unit 7. This unit is divided up into two sections - Level 1 provides lesson plans, activities, and outlines for beginning writers; Level 2 is modified for more proficient, higher-level writers.

Unit 8 - Taking a Stand: Through this Unit, you will teach your students the foundations for argument writing, the process of writing a pro-and-con piece of writing, and will equip them with the skills they need to write a multiple-paragraph argumentative essay.
