Writing 101 A Writing Curriculum

Writing 101 is a complete writing curriculum with three units on Narrative, Expository and Persuasive writing. The curriculum incorporates ELA standards and is aligned to the Common Core. I have created this curriculum for the past fourteen years and use it in my classroom daily.
Included:

Unit 1: Narrative Writing
An overview of the writing process with example essays. Includes 8 narrative prompts
Unit 2: Expository Writing
An overview of expository writing with model essays and 5 prompts
Unit 3: Persuasive Writing
An overview of persuasive writing with 5 prompts. Also includes example essays for struggling writers.

Also included: Focus Skill Editing and Student Grammar Editing Sheets
After each essay prompt is a Focus Skill for editing.
If taught in order, the Focus Skill edits go from content edits to specific grammar edits. Only 2 to 3 skills are edited at a time. Each essay has a rubric with content and grammar items.
Over time, skills are added to rubrics so students will “carry” certain skills forward. For example, after students edit for varied sentence structure, that skill is added to each rubric that follows.
At the end of the curriculum is a set of editing charts that can be used with every essay in place of the focus edits if a teacher wants a more thorough edit. There is also a content edit if students need to edit that skill.

Essays Designed for Different Learning Levels and Promote the Core Curriculum Skills of Working with Documents:
These essays go from easy to more challenging assignments. For instance, the first essays are five paragraph narratives. Students write from experience mostly and are not working with documents.
The middle essays (expository essays) are more challenging because they are based on literary writings. Students are asked to demonstrate their understanding of the readings by explaining something about the writing. The last essays (persuasive) require students to use charts, documents, or other information to convince the reader of a certain point of view (Core Curriculum skill).
Each essay assignment contains a sample essay and a sample prewrite. Some essays also contain an outline or writing plan. Struggling students usually find these sample essays helpful. These essays are designed for the later middle school and early high school grades. Thanks for your interest. Penny Wood
