Writer's Notebook ~ 40 Poetry Writing Prompts

This pack includes 40 poetry writing prompts per month for your students' Writer's Notebooks! I have included prompts that are specifically for how to write poetry!

We use the black and white composition books for our Writer’s Notebooks. The first week of school students are able to bring in things to decorate the cover of their notebook (I also provide stickers, decorative paper, etc.).

The idea behind the Writer’s Notebook is to simply get kids writing. The prompts are short (I give no more that 2-5 minutes per prompt). Students can then use the writing “seeds” they plant in their Writer’s Notebooks to use as inspiration for future writing projects. We write in our Writer’s Notebooks 3-4 times a week. You can give the prompts in order, or pick and choose. Feel free to add any additional prompts as well!

Once a week, I have my students mark one page in their Writer’s Notebook with a post-it note. This is the only page I respond directly to each week. I usually write a note back with my comments and ideas for extending the writing to a larger piece.
