Description

The ancient Egyptians wrote in beautiful hieroglyphs on papyrus, in tombs, and on temple walls. To teach students about hieroglyphs from Egypt, use this printable phonetic hieroglyphic alphabet. Simply print and hang in your classroom for students to view and utilize. This would make a quick bulletin board! Laminate for future use.

This PDF file includes a two page title page that reads, “Write Your Name in Hieroglyphs.” Each page includes a drawing of a hieroglyph and the phonetic sound it makes. This download includes 26 colored illustrations and 26 black and white pictures.

This hieroglyphic alphabet is based on Sir Alan Gardiner’s phonetic translation of Middle Egyptian. A few changes were made to make the alphabet clearer for modern English phonetic translations.

The following illustrations were used for the printouts:

A: Arm

B: Foot

C: Basket

D: Hand

E: Vulture

F: Horned Viper

G: Pot Stand

H: Shelter

I: Reed

J: Snake

K: Basket

L: Lion

M: Owl

N: Water

O: Lasso

P: Stool

Q: Hill

R: Mouth

S: Folded Fabric

T: Bread Loaf

U: Quail Chick

V: Horned Viper

W: Quail Chick

X: Basket and Folded Fabric

Y: Reeds

Z: Door Bolt

These hieroglyphs would work well with Draw Like an Egyptian: Ancient Egyptian Art Project or the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs Cartouche Worksheet.
