Description
This is a thorough 6-week group counseling curriculum for an anxiety reduction group. I usually hold it in the school I work at with between 5-10 students per group (although I have done it with as few as 3 and as many as 12). This could also be a wonderful unit for teachers to borrow from to work on teaching coping skills and social emotional learning skills to students related to anxiety.
Each of the 6 sessions includes the week's objective, an opening activity, the main curriculum (all handouts and worksheets included), and a closing mindfulness exercise. No prep is required aside from printing the materials!
The objectives for each week are included below:
Session 1 (Intros + Recognizing Anxiety): Establish a sense of safety in the group and learn to recognize physical signs of anxiety in our bodies.
Session 2 (The Human Stress Response): Learn about the body's fight/flight/freeze response and the difference between real and perceived danger.
Session 3 (The Good Side of Anxiety): Review the difference between real and perceived danger. Discuss the "good side" of anxiety and ways anxiety symptoms are often survival adaptations designed to protect us. Identify specific types of worries in group members' lives.
Session 4 (Cognitive Distortions/ Thinking Errors): Understand ways our body physically responds to stress/ anxiety and attempts to keep us safe and help us survive during times of distress. Learn about various cognitive distortions and identify cognitive distortions in students' own lives.
Session 5 (What's in My Toolbox?): Identify specific types of worries/ anxieties in own life. Learn the four different types of coping skills and be able to name coping strategies within each category. Identify effective "tools" (coping strategies) in their "toolbox" that they already use and tools they would like to utilize more.
Session 6 (Review + Wrapping Up): Review and practice previous mindfulness/ coping exercises learned throughout the group. Create transition object for group members to take with them after group concludes. Allow students time to reflect on their experience in the group and provide feedback (via "Feedback Form") for the future.
This is a very thorough product and I spent a lot of time creating each worksheet and handout. I have gotten great feedback from students and teachers! Please feel free to share your experience with the product-- I welcome feedback! :)
