What educators are saying

As per usual, such great quality! The visuals helped my students connect the important role of African Americans as well as how WWII led to the civil rights movement.

Description

This fantastic full lesson plan on the "Double V" has your students analyzing primary source documents related to African Americans' experiences during WWII.

In 1943, an African-American newspaper coined the term "Double V" in regards to seeking "victory over enemies abroad and over racism at home." However, African Americans still served in segregated units and experienced discrimination throughout the war.

This lesson has students working individually, in pairs, or in small groups to analyze primary source documents related to different aspects of the African American experience during World War 2.

Included is a full lesson plan with essential questions and the steps to take throughout, plus:

  • An introductory reading
  • Links to recommended videos
  • Student worksheet chart
  • 10 Primary Sources related to the Double V
  • A PowerPoint & Google Slides version of the images
  • Editable Google Doc version of the documents

This is an amazing lesson to incorporate the Civil Rights Movement into your World War 2 unit and go deeper into the experiences of minorities during wartime! This also makes for an excellent lesson for Black History Month!
