Description

In this World War I and gas warfare student investigation activity, students investigate the role of gas and chemical weapons utilized by Germany (first used in the war in Ypres, Belgium). Students investigate a variety of documents related to gas use in World War 1 to understand the terror and havoc that these gases created, and the symptoms of soldiers who encountered gas on the battlefield. Through 11 total source documents, students analyze a variety of primary source documents including words from soldiers, images of those afflicted, text from the Hague Convention, the Geneva Protocol, mustard gas, chlorine, gas, and much, much more. Also included is a final student prompt to evaluate the overarching questions, as well as an optional extension assignment to connect to modern gas warfare!
