What educators are saying

Excellent resource, as usual.
My freshman are like deer in headlights on the first day. This was an excellent resource to get them back into "student mode" in history class.

Description

Have your very first day of teaching high school World History completely covered with these first day of school activities. Included you will find:

  • 20 Slides (PowerPoint and Google Slides™) that contain a Two Truths and a Lie: World History Edition Game and customizable slides for your own classroom information
  • Printable Get to Know You student inventory sheet
  • Ice Breaker BINGO cards
  • World History Events Sort for small group collaboration
  • Continents and Oceans map quiz and answer key
  • Geologic Timeline Activity with Questions and Answer Key
  • A New History for Humanity Video Questions and Answer Key
  • Links to Google copies of the Geologic Timeline and A New History Video Questions

This lesson was designed with a 90-minute block in mind. If you have shorter class periods, you will find that all of this material will not fit into one day, especially if you add in your own syllabus/class procedures review. There is enough material to cover more than one 90-minute block class.

The World History Events Sort activity gives you 12 major world events. Cut out the event cards, shuffle them, and give one set each to small groups of 3-4. Have your groups attempt to arrange the events in order from the earliest events to the most recent! This is a collaborative activity that gets students reading and thinking about world history while getting to know their classmates.

The "Two Truths and a Lie: History Edition" game is a fun, low-key way to end your very first class. Instead of having students come with the truths and lies about themselves, you have six slides that have strange history facts mixed with a lie. Have your class guess which one isn't true!

The Geologic Timeline is a great way to have students take a look at the "bigger picture" of history before diving into the course content.

Most slides are not editable, but I have included six editable/customizable slides so you can add your own first day of school information like class procedures, grading policies, etc.
