What educators are saying

This was a great group activity for the beginning of the course to give them a sampling of different cultures. Thank you.
I was able to use this as a basis for beginning the multicultural class I teach. This resource made it easy for my students to trace the various creation myths.

    Description

Everything you need to teach Creation Myths from around the world is in this Unit Plan. Includes group work, research, presentations, essays, compare/contrast assignments, and creative writing. Everything is aligned to standards and includes grading rubrics.

There are many different options for assignments that you can do with this unit. I have outlined the different elements below with the standards taught and the time needed. Feel free to mix and match as much as you wish. If you wanted to do every activity in the unit, I would do them in the order shown below.

I use the FREE materials from www.bigmyth.com -

You can use any version of the creation myths; however, I use the creation myths from The Big Myth for my class. On their free website, they have video animations of each creation myth, printed materials that include the myth, a list of the main gods, history, and background of the culture.

    Creation Myths Group Presentations

Students will work in pairs (or individually) to learn the creation myth, gather research, and present it to the class. This allows you to introduce a variety of mythological systems before teaching all of them.

    Materials Included:

    • Teacher Directions
    • Project Overview / Assignment - for students
    • Group Sign Up Sheets
    • Presentation Grading Rubric
    • Student Notes
    • Audience Notes/Rubric
    • Team Evaluations
    • Self-Reflection
    • Total Project Points Tracker

Write Your Own Creation Myth - This is a Freebie! Download it Now!

I don’t do this assignment every year – it depends on time and student interest. This can be a written Creation Myth in the form of a story – or if you want, you can have students present in a creative/digital way. This is meant to be fun and a break between the research and essay and the next unit.

    Materials Included:

    • Teacher Directions
    • Write Your Own Creation Myth Criteria for students
    • Narrative Writing Rubric aligned to standards

    Time Needed: 2 days

    Standards: W 3, L 2

    Creation Myth Compare/Contrast

This is a great activity for students to see similarities in the myths – especially if students are assigned myths from different parts of the world.

    Materials Included:

    • Teacher Directions
    • Compare/Contrast Triple Venn Diagram for students

    Time Needed: 1 day

    Standards: R 9

    Creation Myth Timed Writing Essay

I used this as a culminating activity/assessment after the Creation Myth Unit. We have done the creation myth presentations, notes, and compare/contrast assignments. On Day 1, the students participate in a gallery walk, where they discuss, brainstorm, and gather ideas to prepare for the timed writing on Day 2.

    Materials Included:

    • Teacher Directions
    • Timed Writing Prompt for students
    • Grading Rubric - aligned to standards

    Time Needed: 2 days

    Standards: W 2, W 9, L 2

    Total Pages: 27

    Total Time: 3 weeks
