My hope is that you will find these pages to be a valuable resource to use with your students who are at the Derivational Relations stage of spelling development. WHY ADD PRACTICE PAGES TO THE WORD STUDY ROUTINE?

Word Work Practice Pages add another layer of practice to the word study instruction and exercises suggested in the Words Their Way books. I found that some students did not remember specific information we discussed during the word study lessons, and I wanted to create a resource that provided additional practice. I also found that parents had questions about certain sorts or patterns after looking at their children’s Word Study Notebooks. I wanted my resource to help the parents better understand the patterns we discussed in class.

It was important for me to provide additional practice that was unique to each pattern and sort. Each Practice Page is developed to accompany the specific words and patterns that students are learning at that time. These are not cookie-cutter activities!

BACKGROUND INFORMATION / WORDS THEIR WAY IN MY CLASSROOM

As a reading specialist and classroom teacher, I see the benefits of teaching word study. I follow the word work routine suggested by the authors of Words Their Way in their core text, Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction by Bear, et al. Students complete their word study work (other than the practice test) in their Word Study Notebook (WSN), a black & white composition book. I prefer this type of book because the pages stay intact throughout the school year.

Throughout the week, my students repeatedly work with their sort words in small groups and individually. They begin their individual word work by cutting apart and sorting their copies of the words. This is followed with a written sort in their Word Study Notebooks. Students also complete sentences, word hunts, blind (no-peeking) sorts, speed sorts, and games.

HOW TO USE THE WORD WORK PRACTICE PAGES

Each sort includes a two-column practice page. The left side is Word Work Practice Page 1; the right side is Word Work Practice Page 2. The two sides can be cut apart so that each one can be glued onto a page in a composition notebook, the choice of many teachers whose students create a Word Study Notebook. You may also choose to leave the two sides as one worksheet… it is up to you!

There are various ways the Word Work Practice Pages can be incorporated into the weekly word study routine. They can be

• sent home for homework

• used alongside teacher instruction

• assigned as classwork to be completed while you meet with other word study groups

• given to students at the end of the week to help assess their understanding of instruction

Word Work Answer Keys are included for all of the Word Work Practice Pages. How you use these is also up to you! You may choose to grade the students’ Word Work Practice Pages or have the students use the answer keys to correct their own work. If students are using the Word Work Answer Keys, I recommend placing them in sleeve protectors or laminating them.
