Description

Word Ladders Set 3- Silent-e, long spelling rules, r-controlled, vowel teams, rabbit syllable division + more! 80 lists with endless possibilities!

Why Word Ladders?

Our ultimate goal with students is that they read carefully and accurately through the whole word using their understanding of syllable types to help them with vowel sounds- WITHOUT GUESSING!

The words in the word ladders are intentionally very similar, requiring students to read through the entire word carefully.

Set 3 includes:

  • silent-e rule: a-e
  • silent-e rule: i-e
  • silent-e rule: o-e
  • silent-e rule: u-e
  • silent-e rule: e-e
  • s says /z/ between two vowels
  • ck says /k/ right after short vowels
  • tch says /ch/ right after short vowels

Just a few ways to use Word Ladders:

  • Partner Work/Group Work- Give each student the same list. Students can take turns reading words down the list. All students should be actively engaged to be sure all are reading accurately.
  • Use word ladders as a skills assessment or progress monitoring tool.
  • Use word ladders as a phonics rule based student spelling list
  • Use word ladders as review lists for previously learned phonics rules.
  • Assign word ladders as homework. Students can read lists to families as a way to practice newly learned phonics rules.

Word Ladders as a center activity:

  • Use the word ladders as an I Spy activity. A teacher or partner can ask to find the words in the list. Ex. I spy the word chain!
  • Ask students to read the Word Ladders and then choose two or three of the words to write & illustrate- demonstrating that they have read the word correctly.
  • Build reading fluency. Have students read the list while recording themselves on a Chromebook or other device. Have students listen to their recordings. Challenge students to see how quickly and accurately they can read each list. Submit your personal best time & accuracy recording.
  • Have students read and then build words using letter tiles or magnet letters.

GET CREATIVE! The possibilities are endless! Your students will love them!
