Description

Here’s a great activity for reading and phonics instruction for kindergarten and first grade! Word families use onset and rime (beginning consonants and word bases) to help young readers apply knowledge of phoneme-grapheme correspondence to sound out words. Use the power of PowerPoint to take advantage of the timed animation features to make the letters appear automatically to support students in sounding out words. All five short vowel sounds are covered in this set of five presentations (one for each short vowel).

See Word Families Short Vowels set 2 for more PowerPoints using different words!

This is perfect for use with a Smart Board, Activboard, or other interactive whiteboard. It can be used without this technology as long as you have PowerPoint and a computer.

Each PowerPoint presentation focuses on a single word family and includes the following words:
_at: bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, flat, that
_et: bet, get, jet, let, met, net, pet, set, wet, vet
_it: bit, fit, hit, kit, lit, pit, quit, sit, wit, spit
_ot: cot, dot, got, hot, lot, not, pot, rot, tot, spot
_ut: but, cut, gut, hut, jut, nut, rut, Tut, glut, shut

Each of the five PowerPoint presentations contains 20 slides. Slide 2 emphasizes auditory practice of phonics with the recognition of rhyming words using pictures. Slides 3 and 4 connect phonemes with corresponding graphemes for the word family. Slides 6 to 17 give practice with applying knowledge of phoneme-grapheme correspondence to sound out words using timed animation for support. Slides 16 and 17 give practice sounding out words without the support of the timed animation. The remaining slides include the title, directions, and teacher notes. A different colored polka dot background is used to help distinguish each presentation. The font for all presentations is Century Gothic in blue.

The sample images show four slides from different presentations. The preview download is a PDF copy of the _at presentation so that you can get a better visual of the layout; each of the presentations follow this same format. The animations do not work in the preview.
