Word Building - Making Words Printables

Word Building: The Fall Freebie provides some fun, seasonal word work! The activity can be done whole-class, small-group, or independently. It’s a great stand-alone activity, or as a component in an Interactive Notebook. Once routines are established, it makes a great Literacy Center activity, too.

When making words, kids manipulate a set of letters to build words, explore spelling patterns, and develop their spelling abilities. It’s a great complement to Daily 5 Word Work and Words Their Way. This is truly a multilevel activity that will benefit your beginning spellers, yet challenge your more advanced spellers.

Directions: Students cut out the scrambled letter tiles along the side of the Word Building page. They’ll manipulate those letters to build as many words as possible, sorting them according to the number of letters. Students then try to find the Mystery Word—the word that uses ALL of the letters. (This is often the most exciting part, and kids LOVE to try to figure that out right away!) To extend the activity even further, a Spelling Sort mat is included so that students can sort their new words by spelling pattern.
