Wonder Novel Unit Test - Includes Multiple Choice, Cold Text, & Essay Responses

This is a bundle that includes a unit test for R.J. Palacio's novel Wonder, designed originally for high school students, but can easily be adapted for use at the middle school level. It also includes a one-page study guide that you can print out and give to your students that correlates with the expectations for the test.

The test begins with Section 1: Characters, which asks students to choose four of six characters listed and. for each, give a description of the character, a conflict the character struggles with, and the character's importance to the novel as a whole.
Section 2: Multiple Choice contains five MC questions related to concepts including protagonist, antagonist, direct characterization, indirect characterization, and perspective (all as they are related to Wonder).
Section 3: Connections to a Cold Text includes a short passage from Thanhha Lai's verse novel Inside Out and Back Again and asks students to answer three MC questions about the passage and then connect the passage to a theme, character, or event in Wonder. (This section produced amazing ideas from my own students! It is important to give them practice with connecting texts.)
Section 4: Reflection on Wonder asks students to choose a character from Wonder who struggles with the idea of being different and describe the issue the character faces and how the character overcomes that struggle. This section is a great way for students to explore the theme of "difference" with an open-ended prompt.

This unit test is largely written, which is a great way to challenge students to think critically and show you their knowledge of the novel in ways beyond simply multiple choice questions or matching. My students really loved this format as it allowed them more opportunities to express their ideas about the novel!

Connecting multiple texts
Analyzing a "cold text" (something they haven't seen before)
Emotions a character exhibits
Constructed response (or "essay writing") skills
Using evidence from a text to support an answer
Themes - difference, isolation, bullying, friendship, and more
Reading directions thoroughly (as two of the direction paragraphs include opportunities for extra credit for those who read them!)

This unit test took my 10th grade students between 45 minutes and 75 minutes to complete.

The study guide includes a list of terms, a list of characters, and a clear and concise list of skills (including some themes from the novel students should be able to discuss and a list of things they should be able to make connections between).
