What educators are saying

This was great to use for my ELA intervention class before winter break. Students enjoyed the opportunity to be creative. It sparked really interesting class discussions about the choices we make with our snowmen.
My class loved this snowman writing activity! I changed the directions a bit to make it more challenging, requiring them to integrate how their snowmanlooked into an actual story with a beginning, middle, and end. They did very well. They loved drawing the snowmen!

Description

This no prep winter writing activity has students secretly create their own snowman and write a matching description of their snowman. Then, all of the students' snowmen are placed on display while students read their descriptions. If they use enough good details, the class should be able to figure out which snowman was theirs, just based on the description!

Use the 3 writing mini lessons and the writing templates included in this resource to help your students follow the entire writing process and write an organized descriptive essay.

This fun snowman activity includes:

  • a mini-lesson that helps students think about using interesting language in their writing - including adding similes
  • a mini-lesson that helps students think about how paragraphs should be organized and on topic
  • a mini-lesson that has students analyze and revise descriptive writing paragraphs
  • scaffolded pages to help students go through the entire writing process as they write their descriptive essay - includes brainstorming, rough draft, revising and editing, and 2 options for final draft pages
  • grading rubrics and answer keys to help you assess student writing

This is a fun descriptive writing lesson for Christmas or for winter for 3rd and 4th grade students.
