Description

Have your students research winter holidays from around the world with this RAFT writing task. This task can be used in 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, or 7th grade. This RAFT writing task has students selecting 1 or 2 countries to research its winter holiday. When students have finished, they can either create a brochure, poster, or a webpage to show their learning. If students choose 2 countries, they will be comparing/contrasting the countries holidays. If students choose 1 country, they can compare/contrast their own holiday with the country's holiday. This is a perfect accompaniment to any Christmas Around the World unit or any winter culture unit.

Two RAFTs are included so you can differentiate for your students. I give my on-level and below students the 1 country choice, and I give my high-achieving/gifted students the 2 country (compare/contrast) choice. Students are working on the same type of project, but on tiered levels! This task can take 1-2 weeks, depending on how in depth you have your students research.

This file includes:

-Teacher directions and tips page

-2 RAFTs (Student directions pages)

-2 graphic organizers (one labeled with categories, one blank so you can customize for your needs)

-2 charts for compare/contrast option (one labeled with categories, one blank so you can customize for your needs)

-Exemplar brochure for students to look at

-Powerpoint file that includes an editable brochure template

-Rubric based on CCSS Anchor Standards that you can assess using this project

This writing task addresses the Common Core ELA standards of expository/informative writing and can be used in grades 3-7. It could be used in 1st or 2nd grade if students work in small groups.

I love to give my students research RAFT writing tasks, and I am sure you will, too! It gives students an authentic reason to write and makes it more fun. Many of my students who were reluctant to write actually began to enjoy it, because they were able to take on different roles for different purposes using a variety of formats. It also enriches those higher students, because they have to put themselves into the role go another and really think about the voice they will use.
