Description

These six prompts on William Shakespeare's Hamlet are challenging, thoughtful, and varied.

Topics include:

  • Gertrude's motives, actions, and relationships in regard to her fate
  • Feigned madness vs. genuine madness in Hamlet and Ophelia
  • Shakespeare's use of humor through contrast and irony
  • The politics portrayed in Hamlet and how it shapes character, conflict & theme
  • The internal and external obstacles in Hamlet's way of seeking revenge
  • The psychological impact of broken familial relationships on the characters' mental and emotional well-being

Upon completion of the play, you can choose to assign a process piece and give students a choice from the six prompts. One page has all six prompts listed.

Or, if you would like to use these prompts for an in-class essay, each prompt is also included on its own page for use in class. An additional lined page is included so you can double side each prompt sheet.

A literary analysis rubric is included (four-point scale), with an area for score and comments.

This will provide an excellent final assessment on Hamlet.

Please see preview for a closer look.

Use words, phrases, and clauses as well as varied syntax to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships between claim(s) and reasons, between reasons and evidence, and between claim(s) and counterclaims.
