Description

“Wild about Rhythm!” is a Smart Notebook game that assesses students’ ability to read 4-beat rhythm patterns using quarter note, two eighth notes, and quarter rest. This is the Smart Notebook Version. To find the PowerPoint version, click here: Wild about Rhythm - Call and Response Game - PowerPoint Version

This game is a call and response game. See the preview for the format. You will need rhythm instruments for this game.

There are several ways to play this game:
1. Teacher plays the "Call" rhythm; class plays the "Response" rhythm. The class gets three times to perform the rhythm correctly. If they succeed, the class gets the point; if they do not play it correctly, the teacher gets the point. (Teacher may need to coach them through reading their rhythm.) In round 1, the call and response rhythms are the same.

2. Divide the class into two groups, zebras and tigers. One group plays the call and the other plays the response. Give the teams 30 seconds to study their rhythm before playing it. Alternate call and response on each page to keep it fair. If you want to keep score, the team that plays their rhythm most clearly is the winner for that page.

3. Rhythm Bee style - Divide into two groups (zebras and tigers), and create two lines. First person in each line comes to the board. Depending on skill level, have them each study the same rhythm or do the same as the above versions of the game (coach students as needed). Teacher says, "One, Two, Ready, Play," and both play the pattern at the same time. Whoever gets it closest gets the point. If they both get it right, both teams get the point. If teacher can't decide, have them do a "playoff" where they play it again, one at a time.

This game usually takes one 30-minute class. This lesson would be most appropriate and enjoyable for 2nd graders up to 6th grade but could be for older students, as well. Level 1 (and maybe Level 2) could be used with Kindergarten and First Grade.
