Description

Every year in the fall, my class studies the unit “Life Long Ago.” I found that this unit was applicable across many grade levels.
I encourage my students and their parents to work closely together to complete the project components, and then as the kids come to class with their heritage information, we complete class activities, such as graphing our continents or even countries of origin, languages spoken, traditions, etc. My students love talking about their families and I love to hear them share their information with their peers. We make connections and compare and contrast our own cultural experiences and in the process find ourselves bonding!
The culminating activity is a Multicultural Feast, which is a spin on the typical Thanksgiving feast. We come together to celebrate our cultures and sample different cultural foods. I ask parents to attend, but have also done this before with just my students. It’s so much fun!
The possibilities are endless! I hope you and your students enjoy this activity as much as my classes have for many years!
