Description

Scientific Method inquiry about the solar system/space

Students will show the distances of the inner planets from the sun compared to each other. Students will show the revolution of each planet using yarn then hang all 4 pieces next to each other to see the difference in their length. Students will come to the conclusion that planets further away from the sun have longer years because of the distance needed to travel in one revolution. The end product will be a visual of the inner planets' orbits around the sun with extra yarn hanging from the paper to show the length of each planets orbit on the model (distances are to scale, sizes of sun and planets are not).

Science vocabulary: hypothesis, procedure, observations, conclusion, elliptical, orbit, revolution, inner planet
Math vocabulary: diameter, formula, approximate

Math skills addressed:
-dividing by powers of ten using mental math
-rounding to tenths
-measuring using cm

Materials needed:
o Yarn (300 cm)
o Scissors
o Ruler with centimeters
o Calculator
o Coloring materials
o 12 x 18 or bigger construction paper (1 sheet)
o Coins (1 penny, 1 nickel, 1 dime, 1 quarter)
