Description

Are you a West Virginia teacher looking for a high-interest, engaging, and quirky writing activity for your students?

This Folklore Mini Unit can be completed within a short time frame, is perfect for middle school and upper elementary students (with guidance), and features two of West Virginia's most fascinating legends- Mothman and The Green Phantom of Flatwoods. These stories are spooky, but written in a kid-friendly manner. This mini unit is perfect to teach around Halloween and can be easily taught alongside West Virginia history content.

Allow your students to be creative with it and watch their engagement soar!

  • Informational Article "What is Folklore" which lists the characteristics of fables, folktales, tall tales, fairy tales, myths, and legends.
  • 4 Page Story "The Day I Saw Mothman" (this imagined story was written using true details, but OMITS more speculative or disturbing aspects of the story such as the Silver Bridge Collapse)
