Webquest or Essay Prompt:
In 1782, a soldier by the name of Robert Shirtliff served for 17 months in an elite fighting force in the Revolutionary War, once being shot twice in the leg and removing one of the bullets alone, only to return to active duty. Shirtliff eventually received an honorable discharge from the military. What makes this story even more amazing is that Robert Shirtliff was actually Deborah Sampson, a woman who disguised herself as a man to serve in the American Revolutionary War. Follow the rubric below to explore the life of this American Heroine.
Rubric
_____Explore the early life of Deborah Sampson and what led her to join the military
_____Discuss the ways in which Sampson was able to avoid detection as a female in the military (her size, ability, and the fighting force that she joined)
_____Discuss Sampson’s time in the military including her wounds and how she was eventually found to be a female
_____Discuss Sampson’s honorable discharge and her professional relationship with Paul Revere later in life
There are six websites selected with links (not Wikipedia) that provide all the answers to each part of the rubric.
NOTE: I personally use these as essays requiring the use of Google Docs, though each essay can easily be a stand-alone WebQuest assignment. They are easily converted for use in Google Classroom OR Canvas (I have used them for both). I have decided to leave my instructions at the top of this assignment in the off chance any purchasers (you) wanted to use my specific guidelines for essay submission using Google Docs. These instructions can be easily deleted if you don't want them. It gives instructions on grading, expectations as well as citations and links to websites to cite online sources in Chicago Style format.
