An optional post test and grading rubric are also included.

    The Big Chill

This engaging cooperative activity includes simulating a real life scenario to investigate the impact of wind and water on temperature. Math activities such as thermometer reading practice and making bar graphs are integrated within this activity.

    What is a Meteorologist?

Activity 1: What is A Meteorologist? This informational reading gives students a general idea of what a meteorologist does. Comprehension questions check for understanding.

Activity 2: Meteorologist Fast Facts: This sheet gives students some important information about a career in meteorology: salary, education, locations, and soft skills they would need.

Activity 3: Famous Meteorologist: Students focus on a local meteorologist from their community.

Resources: A list of resources related to being a meteorologist is provided.

    Weather PowerPoint:

This PowerPoint introduces key vocabulary and concepts around the earth science concepts of weather. Weather instruments, cloud types, severe weather and the job of a meteorologist are covered. At the end there is a concluding video that ties the concepts together. Opportunities for student participation and discussion are embedded throughout.

Notes for the teacher are included on every slide with suggestions on how to make the slides interactive. A notes page is included for students to complete throughout the PowerPoint or as an assessment.

    NGSS3-ESS3-1
Make a claim about the merit of a design solution that reduces the impacts of a weather-related hazard. Examples of design solutions to weather-related hazards could include barriers to prevent flooding, wind resistant roofs, and lighting rods.
    NGSS3-ESS2-1
Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season. Examples of data could include average temperature, precipitation, and wind direction. Assessment of graphical displays is limited to pictographs and bar graphs. Assessment does not include climate change.
