Description

Waves: Besides saving you time, and stress, this activity is designed to explain and review types of waves. The reading passage will include transverse, compressional, and seismic waves. After a reading passage, there are four multiple choice questions and a constructed response. I pass out this homework assignment as a review before the student's assessment. This activity may also be valuable if you have a substitute covering your class!

HOW DO I IMPLEMENT THIS AS A DISTANCE LEARNING TOOL?

Easy as A - B - or - C!

A. We are currently using Google Classroom as a distance learning platform. If you are also using Google Classroom, you already know that it is easy to schedule assignments that have attachments. It is as easy as that: attach this resource to your assignment & have the students respond to the multiple choice questions and BCR.(IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GOOGLE CLASSROOM DOC CLICK HERE)

B. If you have the ability to email your students, simply attach this resource, and have them respond to the multiple choice & BCR.

C. We currently have several students who do not have the ability to complete online work. As a result, we have had to send physical packets. This would be the only case where you would need to print the resource and have the parents pick it up. We have coordinated packets for three week time frames.

NGSSMS-PS4-1
Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave. Emphasis is on describing waves with both qualitative and quantitative thinking. Assessment does not include electromagnetic waves and is limited to standard repeating waves.
NGSSMS-PS4-2
Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Emphasis is on both light and mechanical waves. Examples of models could include drawings, simulations, and written descriptions. Assessment is limited to qualitative applications pertaining to light and mechanical waves.
NGSSMS-PS4-3
Integrate qualitative scientific and technical information to support the claim that digitized signals are a more reliable way to encode and transmit information than analog signals. Emphasis is on a basic understanding that waves can be used for communication purposes. Examples could include using fiber optic cable to transmit light pulses, radio wave pulses in wifi devices, and conversion of stored binary patterns to make sound or text on a computer screen. Assessment does not include binary counting. Assessment does not include the specific mechanism of any given device.
