What educators are saying

This is a great resource to keep the students engaged in the artist's history and techniques. Students loved the roll-a-dice activity.
This has got to be one of the most enganging, low prep resources my students have tried so far! I think kids really connect with Kadinksy through the colours, shapes, and imaginations he inspires! Thank you!

Description

Ready to liven up your elementary art curriculum with a fun roll a dice drawing game? This Wassily Kandinsky art project will boost student confidence and creativity. Kids will appreciate his Abstract Expressionist style of painting. Moreover, they’ll connect with his personal story about being from a creative family and pursuing a career in visual arts.

And, it’ll help time-starved teachers like you create lesson plans based on modern artists like Wassily Kandinsky.

During this art lesson on Kandinsky, your class will learn about abstract art vs. non-objective art, geometric shapes, and expressive lines. And, they’ll learn where the name “Blue Rider Group” came from. Students will create an abstract watercolor painting using the step-by-step guide and PowerPoint.

Plan lessons for elementary students about contemporary artists and art appreciation in a way that excites them. Finally feel confident in your art curriculum and be organized and prepared to teach art!

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Can I be honest with you? Art history can sometimes be boring for kids. There, I said it. Teaching about artists and cultures doesn’t have to be a snoozer, though!

I’ve designed 3 different ways for students to attempt this Kandinsky lesson. All will engage kids to create! Choose which way works best for your classes:

  • Roll a dice game to add randomness to your student’s artwork
  • “You Pick” art worksheet for kids to choose their own elements
  • Digital spinner wheels, so kids can randomly pick elements and you can integrate technology in the art room
  • Printable dice template in case you have no dice
  • Step-by-step picture directions to guide students through the art process
  • Drawing practice worksheet, for kids who want to sketch out their ideas
  • Wassily Kandinsky Artist biography about the life and work of this Russian painter, so you don’t need to research
  • “Big Ideas” reflection worksheet where students write about their art process
  • Self-assessment worksheet so kids can think about how they performed during the project
  • Art grading rubric which assesses expectations, craftsmanship, work habits, creativity, and clean-up
  • 8 “I CAN” Statements aligned to the Studio Habits of Mind to use during instruction or post on your bulletin board
  • 4 Art exit tickets with quick, thought-provoking prompts
  • Art history coloring pages to keep kids inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s artwork outside of the art room

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Visual arts is not a strength in my teaching. It was awesome to try this resource with my students. I liked that it gave students a choice, and was intentionally no pressure. This art project was a HUGE hit with my class, I had 100% participation. Almost all of my students made a second art piece, when previously it was difficult to have then engage with any art project.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This lesson was great for my students!! It was super helpful for them to look at the chart to get ideas of abstract shapes and lines. The process pictures were also very helpful!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved using this resource because you can run the activity in multiple ways. It was very easy to use and it made creating a Kandinsky-inspired picture really easy as well - for only $5!! Thank you for this affordable resource.
