Vowel Sounds Cue Cards - Speech Therapy Visuals for Articulation - Speech Cues

This resource contains cue cards for 25 vowel speech sounds of English (including non-rhotic vowels). These vowel speech sound cue cards are great for providing students with consistent cues when they're learning new vowel sounds in Speech and Language Therapy sessions! A must-have for your Speech Therapy toolkit!

These vowel sound cue cards were fully updated in September '23.

⭐️ The vowel sounds included in this resource are:

/ɪ/- bit, /ɛ/- bet, /æ/- bat, /ɒ/ or /ɑ/- lot, /ʌ/- but, /ə/- about, /ʊ/- book,

 /i/- beep, /ɑ/-balm, /ɔ/- bought, /u/- boot, /o/ - no,

/eɪ/- bait, /e/- bait, /aɪ/- bite, /ɔɪ/- boy, /aʊ/-mouth, /əʊ/- boat, /oʊ/ boat, /ɚ/- butter, /ɝ/- bird.

Also includes non-rhotic vowels: /ɪə/- hear, /eə/- square, /ʊə/- cure, and ./ɜ:/- nurse

Please note: The vowel sounds included in this resource are based on those listed in the vowel quadrant on the International Phonetic Alphabet, however, as there can be variation of these sounds based on regional dialect, some alternatives are included, for example both /e/ and /eɪ/ for the long “a” sound.

You may also use a different IPA symbol to those provided.
Please be sure to check which variation you require prior to printing.

⭐️ About the Vowel Sound Cue Cards:

There are 3 different sets of cue cards included in the resource.

Each cue card includes a variety of cues to support students in producing the target sound. The types and amount of cues varies depending on which cue card set you’re using. Each set has an explanation page before it, so you can learn more about the individual cue card sets and who may benefit from each type.

Supplemental visuals and cue cards are included to provide additional information regarding tongue height, tongue position, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: This resource includes a COLOR VERSION ONLY. I felt that the images lost a degree of clarity when in line art form. However, you can print in grayscale from your printer options if preferred, as the shading is preserved in this format.

⭐️ Ideas for use:

• Print and put on a bulletin board display as a sound wall.on.

• Use the ‘Vowel Speech Sound’ pages (all sounds on one page) for stimulability assessment, progress monitoring, and educating others.

⭐️ Preparation:

Print onto cardstock. There are two sounds per page; cut the page in half to get individual cards.
Laminate if desired (useful if you want to draw extra cues on the cards).
Tip: Print multiple pages to one page if you want smaller cue cards.

These are suitable for US, UK and Aus. English! (other than the word "color" on the front cover, everything else has spellings suitable for UK/Aus English settings!)
