Vocabulary Activities for Any Word List: Set 2

Whether you want students to CONNECT with new words, WRITE with new words, or have FUN with new words, this differentiated vocabulary activities bundle is a crowd pleaser.

Designed to work with any vocabulary list, these creative tasks will get your students thinking outside the box. If your classroom culture calls for small group activities, learning stations, bell ringers, differentiation options, brain-based learning, or enrichment, this bundle will keep your students interacting with their words in meaningful and unique ways.

*Note: These creative, critical thinking vocabulary activities are specifically designed to be used with Tier 2 words. That is, high-frequency academic words that appear often across content areas. Students will see these words while reading, hear them in speech, and want to use them in writing. You can view an example list here.

Digital Vocabulary Activities for Any Word List

1. 15 creative prompts that encourage students to make associations, to categorize, and to transfer their understanding

Vocabulary Picture Association Activities

1. Symbolic Coloring Picture Associations - With this activity, students will study a cartoon image, identify a word from their list that relates, and then choose a color that symbolizes the word. Finally, students will color the image, making sure to use the symbolic color, and they will write explanations for their associations. Students will also determine whether the image implies a positive or negative connotation of the word.
2. Picture Association Sentences - This activity is the most traditional of the three. Students will be able to study task cards that each feature one image in order to make a connection with a vocab word. Then, they will write or orally discuss a sentence that includes that vocabulary word.
3. Inkblot Picture Associations - Inkblots are the most divergent picture association activity in this resource. If possible, print them in color because students may make different associations if they can see the color in some of the images than with grayscale. Students will make a connection and explain their rationale.

Vocabulary Writing Activities

1. 5 RAFT writing assignments that encourage students to use their words in writing as they take on different points of view and write for different audiences.
2. Vocabulary Triangle Connections activity. Students select three words from their current or previous lists and make connections between those words on the graphic organizer. Then, they write about what the words have in common.
3. 6 Room Poem exercise, which encourages students to think about the vocabulary word from different sensory angles as well as its connotative and denotative meanings. Scaffolding suggestions and an example are included.
4. Tweet a Word activity brings relevance and brevity to vocabulary writing practice. Students will practice writing tweets from two angles. They will write about the vocabulary words, and they will write from the persona of the vocabulary words. These tweet messages are fun to cut out and display around the room.
5. Vocabulary Diamantes give students the opportunity to write about their word from the angle of synonyms or antonyms. Plus, it includes an idea for an extend-your-thinking enrichment step if some of your students could benefit from a challenge.
6. School Schedule activity, wherein students write about their vocabulary words as they relate to their classes.
7. Rubric - editable in PPT so you can adapt it to meet your expectations...this rubric is flexible and brief enough to be used with any of the vocabulary in writing activities.

Word Parts Lesson
Included, you will find the following resources, which can be used with any root words, prefixes, and suffixes and related vocabulary words of your choice:

1. A VISUAL - Use the tree with roots as a graphic organizer for students, or use the high-resolution file included to blow it up into a large anchor chart format for your use during a minilesson. Students will use the graphic organizer to see the connection between a root word, such as cede, and related words, like precede, recede, and secede.
2. MINILESSON IDEAS - Suggested language and directions are included for how I teach the short minilesson, along with an option for scaffolding. While teaching the minilesson, students can be filling out the graphic organizer for later reference. A YouTube link is included for a video minilesson covering root words, prefixes, and suffixes. You can use it with distance learning, stations, flipped lessons, reteaching, and more.
3. A HANDOUT - Encourage students to extend their thinking with sentence frames that help them explain how the root word shapes their understanding of the related word. Included as a Google Drive link and a secure PDF.
4. AN ACTIVITY - Make vocabulary sticky by asking students to apply word part understanding and attack strategies to unknown words. Students will walk, step-by-step, through the process of defining words using word parts, identifying word meanings based in context clues, verifying definitions, and extending learning through connections. This activity is included as a Google Drive link, but you can also download it as a PDF for paper and pencil use.
