Description

From Mr. Stickler's Class!!

This PowerPoint teaches to these National History Standards: Era 4, Standard 4B, Grades 5 - 12 ("Assess the importance of monasteries, convents, the Latin Church, and missionaries from Britain and Ireland in the Christianizing of western and central Europe.") The PowerPoint itself has 11 slides with color photos and quotes from primary sources on the Viking attack on Lindisfarne monastery. There is a summary slide (slide 11).

The PowerPoint teaches students about the Vikings and what we know about their attack on Lindisfarne monastery in 793 C.E. Students will learn about Viking homelands, the Viking link to early Russian heritage (through the Kievan Rus), their influence on Byzantine culture, and the meaning of the word "Viking" itself! Color photos of Viking helmets and color maps of Viking lands and migration patterns are included.

My 8th graders loved this! I used this at the start of the year when teaching content related to the Bering Sea "Land Bridge Theory" and who the "first Americans" really were. (I linked this to Leif Ericsson and Eric the Red, the Vikings who are believed to have reached the North American continent first.) As a product assignment, I gave students the option of bringing in Viking foods (foods Vikings may have eaten; there are a lot of recipes for this online!) and almost every 8th grader chose this option out of the three I gave them! The food turned out great, too! I have also used this with 7th graders when talking about the history of the Americas (in Indiana, this is in the 7th grade academic standards).

USES - I created this PowerPoint with 7th and 8th graders in mind. It worked great with this student population. Teachers could also use it in more "specialized" history classes - like European or World Civilizations - with high school students. The PowerPoint itself is not "content heavy" - in other words, there aren't a lot of notes to write or words to read on slides. This makes it great for a quick review as well. This could also be used as part of a Cultural Fair activity!

WHAT YOU WILL GET- When you download the PowerPoint file, you will get a 11 - slide PowerPoint with the above information included. You will get a 2 - slide sample when you download the free preview file.
