Value of Coins

This math flipchart for Promethean Board teaches students the value of coins and how to count pennies, nickels, and dimes. This flipchart is aligned with 14.1 Houghton Mifflin Math - 1st grade. The lesson opens with a word problem in which students must use simple division to solve, and use a the visual to check. Next, is a quick review (test prep) and lesson quiz (pre-test) derived from the text. Next is a title page introducing the lesson and then a page stating the lesson's objectives. The lesson then introduces vocabulary term(s): cent, penny, nickel, and dime, along with the definition, visuals, and a higher order thinking prompt. The first guided activity shows students how to count on to get the amount of the coins shown. The next activity allows students to show what they know by counting groups of coins. This can be done whole group, or have students work in pairs with paper and check answers on the board. The next activity is a matching game in which they match the amount to the appropriate set of coins. On the following page is a link to a fun, interactive coin online game in which you can specify which currency you would like to use. The next page allows for review and closure, in which they are to tell their partner two things they've learned from today's lesson. Last is a math journal prompt for students to complete.
