Description

Looking for a thoughtful, quick, and creative close reading lesson for Valentine's Day that covers several standards for your middle or high school students? I love to bring holiday themed lessons in when I can, but I am always very cautious to choose lessons that are standards-based. This mini-lesson meets both requirements perfectly!

Student Experience: Students exercise summarizing and close reading skills as they read the article about a couple whose love brought them back together after several decades. Next, students will respond to the article using either the open-ended or multiple choice questions. The questions are primarily structured to target common core ELA standards, but I have included some optional questions that could be supplemented to meet history standards. You can close the lesson by having students respond to the creative, poetry-writing extension project. This article's “love” theme makes it perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Includes:

-Formal lesson plan

-Super simple sub sheet

-Standards links

-Link to article

-Idea for starter

-Short answer questions and answers

-Multiple Choice Questions

-Argumentative Prompt

-Extension Idea

-100% Editable

Classroom success stories from teachers who have tried this resource:

♥ "We did this the Friday before Valentine's Day--the students loved it! The thought-provoking questions were awesome!"

♥ "My special education students really enjoyed this lesson. The questions used to introduce the article really prompted discussion. Everyone had something to share. As a whole group, we read the article, discussed the questions, and completed a summary (SWBST). Great tie in for Romeo and Juliet and Valentine's Day!"

♥ "Excellent tie in for Valentine's Day AND for our study of Night. It is good for them to see a little "good news" from WWII.

♥ "Great review for poetry prep for state test and also incorporated it with a connection to Romeo and Juliet!

♥ "Great lesson. I love the article. It definitely went over well in my classes!"
