About This Resource:

  • These beginning sound picture matching task cards are perfect for small groups, morning bins, word work, or an independent center activity for February or close to Valentine's Day!
  • These are a great early literacy activity to accompany a Valentine's Day or February themed read aloud anytime during the season.

This Resource Includes:

  • 26 pairs of picture card pairs (one for each letter of the alphabet)
  • Please note: the matching pair for Xx includes pictures that represent ending sounds (box and mix)
  • Recording sheets (optional)
  • There are 2 choices for recording sheets -- one is a vertical sheet with all 26 letters of the alphabet to trace on 1 sheet but the letters are a bit smaller
  • The other option is horizontal with larger letters and takes up 2 pages (I recommend copying front and back)
  • See preview video for details

Preparation:

  • Print, cut, and laminate picture cards
  • Print recording sheets if using

How to play:

  • Mix up picture cards.
  • Have children sort the cards to find pairs of pictures that begin with the same sound.
  • For example, if they pick up the card with balloon on it, they will look for the card with the picture of the bug on it since they both start with the /b/ sound.
  • If they are using the recording sheet, they would then find Bb, and trace the letters since Bb represents the beginning sound of balloon and bug.

Variations:

  • This Valentine's Day beginning sound matching game can be played without the recording sheet if children are not yet ready to match letters and sounds and just need to practice with pictures and sounds right now.
  • Simply have them match the picture cards together to create pairs.
  • FUN TIP: These can also be used as partner cards when you need to pair up students but want them to practice initial sound matching! Pass them out and let children find their match! (*A few cards may need to be copied and used more than once if you have more than 26 children in your class/group)
